G for gentle, gallant, genuine, good-willed, generous, genius, good, good-natured, gorgeous, great, grand, and grateful, all that granny and the innocent child are, the positives. The wolf is ghastly, gloomy, gnarled, graved, groping, gruff, and guilty, the negatives, GRIM.

Wolves were important to the forests, but not to the farmers taking over the woods, So the wolf, the first tamed animal helping the ancient hunters, now our pet dog, in the middle ages of farming, became the veil, gruff, gnarled animal. I can imagine why the wolf is in survival mode.

Today's wolf is one who tries to fool a con, which can be grim, which is eating and stocking, or worse in our horror stories. Young girls are not to talk to strangers, because that person may be in a wolf’s coat or as in this 18th century folktale dressed in granny’s clothing.

Little Red Riding Hood

Granny is sipping a cup of tea in a comfortable, loving, safe and secure place with the help of the wood ‘would’ cutter in her basket of tricks. Granny’s house is the end of the journey and that Hooded Red traveled through many wolves to become an old grandmother and no wolf is going to eat her. This is my enhanced, re-imaged story!

The story from, ‘The Three Billy Goat Gruff’, a Nordic European folktale, that has many versions and told for motivation against tyranny. This is my take on the story, which is again full of symbols and analogies, especially word ‘Whose tramping over my bridge’. Analogy of a goat defeating the toll master, a troll, which makes a lasting folktale. The bridge is to entice the goats, who are sure footed, balanced, flexible climber to walk over the bridge as they do up a steep mountain. Their horns called horns of plenty have the abilities to fight to survive with enemies. Goats are survivors of a fierce climate. The troll does not know what or whom he entangles in his hunger. As in Norse folklore, a troll sits under bridge and will eat any one who wants to pass over, his role most likely taken from the Valkyries who guard the Bridge to Heaven and took offerings from those who pass. So this troll guards a handmade bridge to fertile food across the raging river in a meadow. Of course, the goats long and desire the sweet feast.

The third girl child of a king is hard, gets harder when her mother dies, and father rejects her gift on his birthday, Ursula is not appreciated by her father, so . . . as an energetic, youth with the help of her servant friends in the court kitchen, Ursula makes her escape into an enjoyable, esteeming eatery and becomes an expert on salt and foods, at The Crossroad INN.  Eventually, Ursula shows her father her efficiently.

Durga is a goddess called to help the Gods. She is their devotee with a duty to drive a demon for the Hindi lands of India. She has all the emotional characteristic for a warrior: daring, driven, disciplined, determination, and dynamic. I met Durga when I was a child running across a field playing "Ya, ya, Ya, you can't get me," actually teasing a monster.

Years later in a creative writing class I wrote a short story of my childhood running through the fields enticing a monster. “Ya, ya, ya, you can’t catch us.” I fell; I knew the monster would suffocate me. When I stopped yelling and screaming, I saw this wonderful magical woman, a warrior. Not my mom, not an angel, not a faery, and not a saint. From then on I knew I was protected. I actually forgot about writing the story, only knowing I always had courage and was safe.

Finally, Durga, herself, spoke to me. "I am the field goddess. I am of the Shakti energies of the earth, the Devi, the goddess of protection created by all the Gods. Durga comes as mere woman to help the innocent. You were a child, who thought a monster lived in the field. Durga helps conquer dangers, helps overcome foes, gives courage to take a stand and fight, if needed slicing off the head of the evil demon. I understood Durga. I had her voice. C or clever, careful, creative, considerate, charming calm, capable, carefree, causal, celebrity, cherish, some of these describe the Rat in the Chinese Zodiac, however many be not. Rat is CLEVER and capable, possible creative, but not charming or calm.  The Jade Emperor calls Rat, SHU, a ambitious, practical, charming, clever, and quick-witted personality. Why RAT Won 

Why Rat Won is a creation myth, how and why the Chinese have a Zodiac. About 6,000 years ago or longer a need to order the days was important. People saw light and dark as a day, and a month by the size of the moon, and a year by the seasons, but now to manage dates to know when something happened. Rat and eleven other animals help in the naming of 12 years in the assets of fire, light, water, mental and earth to make 5 circles making 60, then starts new. PLUS, the traits of the animals are loaded with personality to help us understand relationships, from matching partners in marriages, and what personality is and will become. Over 6,000 years and longer, there are trues in this process. The Zodiac is one complicated, complex system of counting, and calculating time and space, a life time of learning. 

The Boundless Troubadour and His BOLD Trickery

B for Bold

 Emotions

   The bold troubadour is seductive and also brilliant. He is a chap of fancy, a dandy a trickster, well-behaved, and really quite brave and bold. Some call him a rogue of charm and magic, or a minstrel with songs and stories. Some call him bane and brass, others call him a jester, while other a beggar or a bum. No matter to him, in his travels he has dined with kings and queens, the wealthiest and the poor. He has jokes and poems for the wealthiest or the regular folks depending on his mood. Ah, tonight, he wants a healthy, hearty home-cooked meal. As he travels on a country road on his fine horse, he's looks for a nice family to share stories and gossip, he wants to be dined by the busy, hard-working country folk, who are not pretentious.

The troubadour wants to be with basic folks like his beginnings!

This is my take on the story, which is full of symbols and analogies, especially the words troubadour, farmers, three stones, pot, and the important soup. Analogies are what make a lasting folktale. The troubadour is the storyteller, the rogue or dandy creating a story in a pot of magic. Is this so for a storyteller, a rogue of charm and magic, a dandy of clothing and speech, a jester of poems and jokes and fun, and a minstrel of songs and stories, who entertains and uses word and conjures up images, actions, and gestures to enhance, fabricate or embroidery a lasting tell. The magic stones are the character and the plot with a stir around in a place. The Troubadour appreciates his audience because they make the soup (story) come alive by what they bring to the pot: the vegetables, meat, herbs and spices: their images. Listeners do loved to be tricked.

The Little Prairie Hen

The folktale the Little RED Hen is important.

She is able, assured, adaptive, ambitious, assertive, astonished by her accomplishment to achieve abundance. In my story of Little Prairie Hen, she solves her problem and helps others, who are not willing to help her.

As a child, the only stories I heard were fishing and hunting stories told by my dad and what my mom told about her relations. So, I made up my stories as everyone else did. In Junior High, I went to the library on my bike with a friend (that's another story) and checked out every fairytale book the library had. The Little Red Hen is one of my favorites. A story of 'getting it done' if you must do so yourself with or without friends.

Listening to the story, you will hear what all good storytellers do is enhanced, re-imaged, elaborate, re-image and embroidered, which is enhanced, as I did with The Prairie Hen.  I saw these birds as my dad drove across the Alpine plains of Colorado near Harzel Flats.

This hen is my 'Little Hen That Could' and also my Grandma Bessie, whom I loved.
